One day we’ll have to explain 9/11 to our grandchildren & tell them how close they came to losing their grandfather. One day isn’t here yet and I’m grateful they’re way too young for this discussion. I’m not ready yet. My husband is even less ready. Seventeen years have passed and that still isn’t enough distance.
When that day comes, when they are old enough to understand, they will know there is true evil in the world. It’s reality. There has been evil since Cain killed Abel.
They will also learn a bit about their grandfather and the scars from that day that will be with him forever.
Most importantly, they will learn about the good in people and how the good always overshadows the evil. They will learn about the heroes. We will tell them about the compassion everyone showed that day and in the days to follow, describe the flags flying everywhere, the memorials to those who were lost.
Like the twin blue lights that rise from the site of the twin towers on every anniversary of 9/11, our grandchildren will understand that light always overcomes darkness.
