There was a viral video maybe a week ago that I’m sure most of you heard about: Yanny or Laurel. It seemed a perfect metaphor for life. Everyone was sure what they heard was the correct answer. (For the record, I heard Yanny.)
The science behind why different people hear different things seems to be tied in to pitch. Someone had a video where they raised and lowered the pitch and you could distinctly hear both words.
Then there was this Brainstorm – Green Needle thing. I can’t for the life of me figure it out. Whichever phrase you think you’re going to hear is what you hear. Try it out. (My apologies but if you are using email, you will likely need to come to my website to view the YouTube video.)
Yesterday we tried that with my family. My brother took it a step further. “Try brain needle.” Yep. We heard that. I forget what other variations we tried but it was amazing. We heard what we expected to hear.
Again, sure seems like a perfect example of life. How often do we hear what we expect to hear instead of what is actually being said? I’m thinking way more often than we’d like to admit.
