The topic of noise has been on my mind lately, particularly the noise of non-stop news.
When I was growing up, we had less television channels than fingers. Those channels had the good sense to go off the air at night and let their employees go home. Insomniacs may not have been thrilled about that but for most of us, we didn’t even notice. The news wasn’t on 24/7. You either caught the newscasts when they aired or bought a newspaper.
In a half century, news has evolved into a never ending loop of noise. If you allow it, there is a constant assault upon not just your ears but your eyes. News has expanded from newspapers, television, and radio and has crept into every device connected to the internet.
I decided the constant bombardment couldn’t be good or healthy and that I needed a break from all the noise. I put a “gone fishing” notice up on Facebook. For now, my social media activity is restricted to cute baby photos on Instagram. My reading is for pleasure and my television viewing is restricted to mind candy. I am greatly enjoying the sounds of silence.
