At 4 this afternoon, cars started pulling up. Lots of cars. Hmmm, must be something going on at the school across the street. Then I see people with signs. There were easily 35 of them. They started walking down the block towards my house.
Keep in mind my glasses are about five years old so I couldn’t see what the signs said. I wondered where they were going and what they were protesting. Then I noticed one had a hug bunch of balloons. Clearly not an angry protest. Angry mobs don’t generally walk around carrying balloons.
They stopped at the house next door. Suddenly I heard singing. The people were singing Happy Birthday. My neighbor is a teacher. She is out of work battling cancer. These were her co-workers. Their signs said things like, “Happy Birthday!” and “We miss you!”
After all the angry divisive stuff filling the news lately, this was so wonderful to see. It was a glimpse into the goodness of people. It was a little bittersweet in a way, knowing why my neighbor is out of work but much more sweet than bitter.
