This is not a cooking post. I have never made, nor do I ever intend to make Baked Alaska. I saw another post on a blog I follow. That blogger did make Baked Alaska. That is what her Baked Alaska looks like. I have never seen one in the wild.
My aunt made Baked Alaska. Whenever she had company, she would tell us, “I made my famous Baked Alaska.” She never did make it for us although she promised she would.
I was fascinated by the thought of Baked Alaska. How could you bake ice-cream? Why didn’t it melt? I asked her these questions. I can’t remember her answers. I’m pretty sure she would have just said, “You’ll see when I make it.”
After she died, I mentioned the Baked Alaska to my cousin. “Well I guess I’ll never get to taste her Baked Alaska.” I was quite disappointed. My cousin started laughing.
“She never made Baked Alaska in her life. That was a running joke between her and your mom.” I was shocked. I completely believed she had made it. And even though she never baked it, I will always think of her whenever I hear a mention of Baked Alaska.
