I would like to introduce you to Herman. Herman has now been living with me for a little over a week. He’s not a terribly demanding housemate. He doesn’t eat much. He’s very quiet. So quiet that I didn’t even know his name was Herman. My sister was visiting this week and told me his name. Up until then, I just called him Amish Friendship Bread Starter. Isn’t Herman so much easier to say? “It’s time to feed Herman!”
Herman seems very happy here. He’s quite full of life, bubbling away:
After doing a little Herman research online, I came across the name German Friendship Cake. Now that makes a bit more sense than Amish Friendship Bread. As I said, this isn’t bread and it sure isn’t Amish. Herman is similar to sourdough starter but it uses milk and sugar so it’s more suited for baking sweet items like quick breads.
Tending to Herman is way easier than, say, tending to a dog or a hamster. No going out to walk Herman in the rain. No expensive vet bills. Definitely a creature more in line with my lazy nature. And sure I’ve already written about Herman and the other creatures I’m raising but life has been a little slow in Monkling’s Universe. Plus, I can talk about food all day – and eat it, too.
