My house is overrun with critters. Teeny tiny critters who want to take over my life. No, I am not referring to my grandson because A) Critters are plural and he’s not. B) I don’t mind if he takes over my life.
The critters I’m taking about aren’t rodents or insects, either. Let me assure you, the tone of this post would be way more frantic if I was in need of an exterminator. These critters are smaller than that.
They currently live in various containers and they demand to be fed, stirred, and babied. Here are their homes within my home:
The one on the left is ginger bug. If all goes to plan, this will be used to make naturally carbonated drinks like ginger ale. I initially was looking up information on how to make kombucha (fermented tea). The kombucha required a starter yeast and I didn’t feel like waiting for that to arrive so I decided to try the ginger bug.
The upper right photo is starter for Amish friendship bread. My daughter and her friends were reminiscing about how I made that when they were all away at college and how good it was. I decided to make some. (The bread part is a lie. It’s closer to cake than bread & I’m pretty certain it’s not really Amish, either.)
The lower right photo is sourdough bread starter. When I threw together the Amish starter, I started reading up about sourdough. Being the curious sort who likes experimenting, I felt we should do sourdough, too. The plan is to make sourdough pretzels. Real, Bavarian pretzels. The kind made with lye.
All of the above critter homes need to sit awhile so they can culture properly. Once we get going with the actual baking and soda making, I will report back on the results. I’ll even share how I made the starters. (No sense sharing now as I have no way of knowing whether or not they will be successful.)
