The Election

I know my blog is supposed to be funny & I think most of the times it is. Once in a while, though, you know I get off the humor track. Normally I don’t like to post serious stuff. I especially like to keep away from politics. Today I’m going all out and mixing serious stuff and politics.

I am posting a link here for a video. If you’re an unwavering Democrat, you probably won’t like this. If you are Catholic, you should look at this.

Eleventh Hour

If I lose half of my regular readers for posting this, so be it. It’s not like I have that many people reading my blog in the first place.

You’re trying to lose me, but it won’t work!

I’m a registered republican and this is the first election that I am truly considering voting the other way. The abortion issue is the ONLY thing keeping me from being 100% sure about Obama. I disagree with abortion completely but I also think about the hundreds of innocent Iraq citizens we have murdered. I know a lot of them needed to be dealt with and I think we needed to do something but in the process we have killed so many innocent people. My nephew did two tours in Iraq and the stories he could tell you about dead children and women are horrible. I’m not sure how murdering babies(abortion) and murdering innocent children is any different. It’s confusing to me…..are you ever going to talk to me again if I vote Obama?

What DF and Katy said, except for the registered Republican part.

Personally I would not trust anyone’s life in the hands of someone who thinks partial birth abortion or allowing a baby who was born alive from a botched abortion to die is acceptable. And, as president, many lives will be in the hands of this man and his government, especially if he gets the government involved in health care.

I don’t care for either party & would like to switch to Independent.

I love you guys regardless of who you vote for but if your guy wins, don’t come crying to me when things get even worse than they are. I’ll just have to say I told you so.

This articulates my position, especially this statement-
“And we Catholics were being asked to ignore all the other important social justice issues in exchange for voting for what was basically an empty bucket.”

    Here’s the rest.
“Why Some Anti-Abortion Catholics Support Obama
In Pittsburgh about a dozen Catholics were protesting the appearance of Pepperdine University law professor Douglas Kmiec, who was addressing 50 students on behalf of Obama — and explaining how an anti-abortion Republican who worked in the administrations of Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush could support the abortion rights candidate.

“We are not baby killers,” Kmiec said. “We are simply finding an alternative way to build up life, to honor the truth of the human person, to promote human good.”

He also told the students that Obama’s policies would reduce the number of abortions more than McCain’s would. Kmiec says the position goes beyond abortion — it includes health care, living wages, caring for the poor.

Kmiec has paid dearly for his endorsement. He’s been denied communion, he’s been publicly criticized by a U.S. bishop, and he’s been told by many fellow Catholics that he’s going to hell.

Kmiec says he’s following the moral teachings of the Catholic Church. In an interview, he noted that the U.S. Catholic Bishops tell Catholics in their document Faithful Citizenship, to judge candidates by their stand on a variety of moral issues.

“If they just wanted to say, find the candidate who labels themselves pro-life, and vote for that candidate, they wouldn’t have given us a 36 page document,” he says. “They would have sent us a postcard or printed a line in the bottom of the parish news letter.”

“But it finally dawned on me — I guess I’m slow on the uptake — that these promises were being made, but there was no follow through,” Cafardi says. “And we Catholics were being asked to ignore all the other important social justice issues in exchange for voting for what was basically an empty bucket.”

Even if Roe is overturned, Cafardi says, the debate doesn’t go away. Abortion would still be allowed in 30 states. It’s time, he says, to stop focusing on the Supreme Court and look for other solutions.”

  6. Monkling says:

Kmiec is completely wrong. He is not following the moral teachings of the Catholic Church. The video was pretty clear on that point. Our bishops have been equally clear on that, as well. That was the purpose of me posting the link in the first place.

  7. Janet says:

Here’s some good reading about Kmiec’s opinion

But the other concerns I have about Obama have to do with the Fairness Doctrine – which would eliminate debate on the issues – it would only leave us with the liberal left. Also it seems to me that the Democrats who claim to be for tolerance are the most intolerant of any opinion that differs with theirs.

I know, Monkling, how much you hate having debate on your blog. But it is good to discuss and to be free to disagree with each other. Right now we have that Freedom – will it be taken away with claims of hate or intolerance because of people speaking their consciences?

  8. katy says:

I read the other day that until 2000, when the first talk of a future presidental campaign was mentioned, McCain was pro-life. I will try to remember where I read that and let you know. Biden is a practicing Catholic who is strictly against abortion even though he is a democrat.

  9. katy says:

Sorry, I meant pro-choice…..too much halloween candy.

  10. Monkling says:

Norma McCorvey http://www.leaderu.com/norma/nmtestimony.html, the woman behind the whole Roe versus Wade court case is now pro life. Many people have changed their positions on abortion.

Biden is a Catholic in name only and misquoted Church teachings: http://foxforum.blogs.foxnews.com/2008/10/28/frj_1028/comment-page-4/

    Just stating facts…

  11. Lanny says:

Thank God Linus’s birthmother does not believe in abortion!

  12. virginia says:

I think Obama’s policies will reduce the number of abortions more than McCain’s,

It’s my opinion. Thank you or letting me share it. Please note I don’t call anyone else intolerant or wrong. You are all entiteled to your opinions too.

  13. Monkling says:
Please note I don’t call anyone else intolerant or wrong. You are all entitled to your opinions too.
And that’s why it’s way safer to have this sort of discussion here than, oh, say on HW – because people can share opinions without feeling like anyone is saying they’re an idiot for having those opinions. (At least I HOPE it’s that way here!)

But even the friendliest of debates leaves me feeling a bit uncomfortable, especially when it’s with people I like so I doubt you’re gonna see anything like this on here again for a long time. Unless I’m really pissed off about something…

  14. virginia says:

    Me too.
I was going to send you an apologetic email, expressing the hope you would still like me even though I see some things differently, but I knew we were still friends when I saw you fixed my crappy spelling in your quote.
    Thanks, bud.

  15. Janet says:

It’s good to be able to agree to disagree.

I also should not have made a blanket statement about Democrats not tolerating people with different views. I’ve run into some people on the far left who seem that way, but must admit the same happens on the far right. So I am sorry if that statement was offenseive. I think most people are in the middle who can have a friendly disagreement and then just be able to drop it and enjoy all the other things that they share in common.

  16. Monkling says:

Virginia, I can’t spell if my life depended on it. Firefox has a spell check add-in.

And having had it both ways, let me tell ya – I’d much prefer that someone I consider a friend trusts me enough to be honest with me about their opinion, knowing I wouldn’t allow that to alter our friendship rather than have someone tell me what they think I want to hear. I’ve run into way more problems with that second one. I consider that as being lied to & I HATE being lied to.

  17. kim-d says:

As usual these days, I am WAY late to the party, but I just had to say what a great string of comments this was; see, this is the way it SHOULD be. There is not one thing expressed here that is offensive to anybody else, and that in itself is incredible.

I am no prude and I’m not easily shocked. But this whole election “season” has me really flummoxed by people; how can people be so nasty? Downright nasty! I am personally more conservative than liberal because I like to choose my own people to give my money to, but I don’t like anybody right now. I agree completely about going independent. However, and here goes…

I do not know a lot about Sarah Palin; it isn’t necessary for me to know a lot about her. She seems okay to me. But what is very upsetting to me is when some person dresses a “dummy” up as Sarah Palin and then HANGS the dummy in effigy. It made the national news, complete with pictures, and it made me SICK. I could not help but wonder what Mr. Obama thought about that, given the “lynching” connatations of that particular move. I’m hoping that any person who would do something that sick is not a person that Mr. Obama would WANT as a supporter. And I’m also rather sickened by some of the things that I’ve heard said about the Palin children. Yes, they are out there campaigning with their Mom and that puts them in the public eye. But what on earth does anyone get from saying mean things about those kids. Say what you want to about the candidates, but leave their kids out of it and don’t do anything involving ropes and trees.

I personally can’t wait for it to be over. And either way, no matter how it turns out, I think we’re all in for a world of hurt…even worse than it has been.

All just my personal opinion, but man it felt good to talk about it. Thanks, Monk!
