Apparently there was this roadway that ran from the middle of Queens all the way out into Suffolk county, Long Island. It was called the Motor Parkway. Vanderbilt had a hand in building it I think & I believe I read something about it being the first major highway. Might even have seen something about races. Hey, I did read the articles but I don’t retain things very well.
It was beautiful out today so, now that my foot is finally better (thanks to the custom inserts I had to pay through the nose for because the stupid insurance company would apparently rather pay for multiple doctor visits instead of a more permanent fix) we decided to go hiking.
We drove over to this park that’s not too far away, Alley Pond Park. There are trails in there. Bike trails, hiking trails, lots of trails. In addition to a section of the Motor Parkway, there is also part of what’s called the Greenway that cuts through Alley Pond. I have yet to find any sort of map for the area that shows all the trails but that’s never been an issue. Until today.
Somehow, we went off the Greenway and onto the Motor Parkway. Not that this was a major issue. We were still in Queens. We just had no idea whether the trail we were on would loop around and meet up again with the Greenway or if we were way off. As we crossed over a bridge and looked down to see what street it was we were passing over, we realized we had no choice but to backtrack. We were way further south than we should have been and we’re familiar enough with the streets to know there was no way we were going to loop up north & get back to our starting point, where our car was parked. Not unless we got out of the woods and onto the streets. I’m sorry but I wasn’t walking out there on the sidewalk. The whole point was to pretend I was a million miles away from the city. Nope, I’d much rather be lost in the woods.
Yeah, lucky thing my foot is better! And it started out being real pleasant but after walking 32,582 miles, it did start to get just a wee bit warm.
35,582 miles? Do you have one of those things that count your steps for you? If you do I want to know where you got it, I like the way it counts.[
