Last night the phone rang. I saw from the caller ID that it was my father. “Hey, Pop. What’s up?”

“Guess where I am,” he said. I had no clue & told him that. On Monday he & his wife left for Florida. They had made it to Georgia by 9 p.m. New Year’s Eve and reached FL on Jan. 1st. Obviously he wasn’t calling from their house because then I wouldn’t need to guess where he was. “I’m in the hospital.”

It seems the man didn’t learn his lesson a year ago when he fell off a ladder, smashed his head through a wall and got a concussion. No, he had to do a repeat. That’s right. He was foolish enough to go ladder climbing again. His wife was in the shower and comes out to find him on the floor, unconscious.

Then he says, “I was never in a helicopter before.” They didn’t immediately know what he damaged so they took him by helicopter to the hospital. He has a concussion. Again. They were keeping him overnight and they’re supposed to send him on his merry way today.

“I’m banned from ladders,” was the next thing he said.

“Oh, gee, really?” I said. “What the heck are you trying to do to us? Have you given Angela (his wife) a heart attack yet?”

I always knew the man was hard headed. I never knew until now just how hard his head was.
