As in cars. I couldn’t decide if I wanted to go with the title I used or name this, Slip Sliding Away. Oh, before I get into why those 2 titles are both appropriate, let me bring you back to your childhood. Does anyone remember a book where each sentence began either with fortunately or unfortunately? I can’t remember another single thing about the book. I can’t even remember whether or not it was one I owned as a child or one that I just heard read on Romper Room or Captain Kangaroo. Getting back to the story…
Last night we headed out to the nursing home. Unfortunately it was cold, dark, and dreary out. Fortunately we were in a nice, warm car. Unfortunately the car spun out on a sheet of ice as we were turning a corner. Fortunately there were no other cars close by. Unfortunately, it slammed into the curb quite hard. Fortunately, it missed slamming into a tree that was only a foot away. Unfortunately the entire car was shaking so we knew something had been damaged. Fortunately we were near our mechanic who happened to be at the station on a day they were normally closed.
Okay, no more unfortunatelys now because our worst fear was that we damaged the axle. This morning Frank spoke to our mechanic who said the wheel rim was badly damaged and gee, we must have hit that curb really hard. Yep. And now I’m off to impose on Dolores this morning to go help me pick up Theresa’s car from the impound lot as soon as I can get the police station on the phone to find out where it is.
