Today as I sat quietly while Tom did magic to make my gray disappear, conversation in the shop turned to it’s usual topic – death. Another hair dresser and her client were talking about wakes. It seemed there were a lot of them lately and, as they were talking about one in particular, the phone rang. It was someone telling them about a client who had died. Another girl who works in the shop turned to me and said, “It’s you! Whenever you’re in here, death comes up.” Tom agreed saying I needed to go out and buy a black hooded robe and a scythe.
A few months ago, shortly before I arrived for my usual cut & color, a man had hung himself out back. I got to hear a lot of gory details because it seems none of the people who worked in the shop actually believed it. They do sorta like gags so when one said, “There’s someone hanging out back,” Tom didn’t believe it and had to go see for himself. After they all witnessed it first hand, they were discussing it in great detail. I was just grateful I didn’t see anything.
The following month, I got to hear how someone expired while sitting in the chair getting their hair done but then came back when the EMS people got there. Then this week, it was wakes.
Now on the surface, it does seem a bit coincidental that this topic always comes up when I’m there. On the other hand, how do I know they don’t talk about death and corpses all the time? Tom & Gina do seem to like wearing black. Maybe it’s something in the coffee they make. Is there some sort of drug that can turn conversation to morbid topics?
Too bad it’s not October. It would be pretty funny to walk in there dressed like a Grim Reaper. Of course if this pattern continues, I still may get to do that when Halloween rolls around.
I think the fact that someone had hung themself out back would make me a little nervous about using this particular hair salon.
You already have a monk robe. Just dye that black and wear it next time.
